Alumnus and senior lecturer in digital marketing at University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Theo Tzanidis argues that Twitter’s new owner will struggle to understand the fundamental principle of digital communities; they love to hate autocrats.

Billionaire Elon Musk completed his $44bn (£38.1bn) takeover of the social media platform in October 2022.

Published in the Herald the article goes on to explain why the social media platform matters. Theo said: “Without Twitter, we may not have seen the ‘me too’ movement take hold, bringing down powerful abusers in the entertainment industry. The platform has allowed citizen journalism to thrive, with stories unfolding in real-time before our eyes. It has been used to expose corruption and to give marginalised groups a voice.”
