Death of former Principal, Professor Richard Shaw
It is with sadness we share the news that former UWS Principal, Professor Richard Shaw, CBE, passed away on 10 March 2022.
Richard was Principal from 1986 to 2001, during which time university status, the merger with Craigie College, and the award of nursing contracts were achieved. Richard was the first Principal of the University and the seventh Principal of the institution in its previous form as Paisley College. A portrait of him hangs proudly in the Court Room.
Prior to his appointment as Principal, Professor Shaw was briefly Vice-Principal and before that Head of Department of Economics and Management.
Richard was originally from Preston and was a graduate of the University of Cambridge. He taught at the University of Leeds, University of Stirling and was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Newcastle NSW, Australia.
Richard was awarded a CBE for services to higher education in June 1997.
Following his retirement in 2001 Richard was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in July 2008 and stayed in touch with UWS, attending a number of University events.
Our thoughts go out to Richard’s wife Sue and family.
