University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Civil Engineering graduate Nicola Turner tells us why she chose UWS to study and how her course prepared her for once in a lifetime projects with construction giant Balfour Beatty Plc.
Tell us about your time at UWS
I choose the UWS BEng civil engineering course as the trimester dates were run so that it provided time for a full summer placement. Also because of the practical experiences provided such as setting out and Wiston Lodge for hands-on learning.
“Practice good time management – it really does help to know what works for you when you enter into employment.”

Tell us about your experiences since leaving UWS
I joined Balfour Beatty as a Graduate Civil Engineer in September 2018 following graduation, and completed the graduate programme and I’m now a Senior Site Engineer working on once in a lifetime construction projects!
UWS allowed me to gain experiences which I was able to use when I started employment that otherwise I would not have had any exposure to.
What advice would you give to current students at UWS?
Practice good time management – it really does help to know what works for you when you enter into employment.
I was able to run through my ideas with UWS lecturers and receive feedback before taking those to others. Peer discussion groups were formed throughout my time at UWS which also helped as you were able to more casually discuss and bounce ideas of each other.
I gained confidence to be able to articulate my thoughts, feelings and ideas to all disciples within the construction industry. It also gave been an insight in what challenges I might face entering in full-time employment.
