UWS graduate selected as finalist for the StudyUK Alumni awards
UWS graduate Paola Obbia has been selected as a finalist for the Professional Achievement Award in the EU region at the Study UK Alumni Awards 2021.
The awards, which take place on Friday 26th February, celebrate the outstanding achievements of alumni and showcase the impact and value of UK higher education. Award winners and finalists are leaders in their fields who have used their experience of studying at a UK university to make a positive contribution to their communities, professions and countries.
The Professional Achievement Award recognises alumni who have distinguished themselves through exemplary leadership and achievements in their professional industry, and who can demonstrate the impact and scale of their achievements in their profession, and beyond.
Paola, who graduated with an MSc in Health Studies, is now a Family and Community Nurse committed to bringing this new role into the Italian Primary Care System. She is a member of the National Health System Lectures staff in Turin, has held co-ordination and consultation roles and is one of the co-founders of the Italian Association of Family and Community Nurses, also serving as its Chair. It also assisted her to explore medical and nursing literature and her improved language skills have allowed her to connect more effectively with her colleagues from all around the world. Paola shares her expertise with professionals and stakeholders in Italy and abroad, having also served on the European Commission initiative, and European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIPonAHA).
Paola said: “Part of my professional role has been connected to my learning path on the MSc Health Studies (Family Health) programme. My research project aimed to understand primary care professionals’ awareness of the frail condition in older people and the possibilities of preventing the transition to disability.

Clair Graham, Senior Lecturer in the School of Health and Life Sciences at UWS nominated Paola for the award. She said: “I am delighted that Paola has been recognised as a finalist for the Professional Achievement Award. Paola is commended for her leadership and advocacy within Family and Community Nursing across Italy, as well as her valuable MSc research contribution and subsequent publication adding to frailty in older people discourse.
