A graduate from University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has gifted £10,000 for a scholarship to support BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering students.

Gerry Donnelly (pictured in the centre above with Professor Milan Radosavljevic and Professor Carl Schaschke) studied the course at UWS 38 years ago and has gifted the money due to his own positive experience at the University, where he won the prestigious Eccles Scholarship for international travel.

I believe the education and training I got at UWS gave me a technical and practical application edge when I began my career and I want to contribute to supporting the next generation of civil engineers. A scholarship was pivotal in my education and I’m hopeful this scholarship will have a similar impact on current UWS civil engineering students.

Mr Donnelly – a prominent member of the American Institute of Civil Engineering – used the scholarship to go to the United States and subsequently launched a successful 38-year career with engineering giant, STV Incorporated. Gerry featured in the alumni blog in 2015 – read Gerry’s story here.

Professor Carl Schaschke, Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences, said: “We are delighted to accept Gerry’s generous gift.

“Gerry has had a fantastic career in civil engineering and we are grateful for his support. We look forward to awarding two of our students the Gerry Donnelly Civil Engineering Scholarship later this year.”

Launched on 1 October 2021, the scholarship will see £1000 being awarded to two third-year BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering students annually, with the funding programme running for five years.

Although he now lives in the US, Mr Donnelly is originally from Neilston and maintains close links with Scotland. After a recent visit to UWS’s Paisley campus, Mr Donnelly decided he wanted to give something back to the University, in recognition of the significant, positive impact that his time at UWS had on his career.

Applications for the scholarship will be open to third-year BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering students at UWS until Friday 29 October 2021. Applicants are required to submit a 400-word narrative describing how the scholarship will support their academic, career and personal ambitions.
