Table Tennis Star Talks Training and Podcasts
In an interview with MatchKit, UWS Graduate and Table Tennis star Martin Perry talks about his career so far, getting back to training and his podcast series PerryPOD, interviewing well known names in sport including Paralympic Champion Will Bayley.
Currently ranked 19 in the world at Table Tennis Class 6, Martin is a 2 x European Team Champion, 2 x British Champion and USA Open Champion.
Born without hands or the bottom part of his left leg, Martin played a number of sports at School in his native Paisley before being introduced to table tennis in 2011. “My brothers always played football in the back garden so I would join them,” says Martin. “I played football through primary school but once I started high school I started playing for the basketball team and the rugby team and also played badminton and hockey.”
He started playing table tennis at the age of 17 thanks to help from Scottish Disability Sport and Drumchapel Table Tennis Club in Glasgow. Pursuing his love of sport, Martin completed the BSc Sport Development Degree programme at UWS Hamilton Campus, but has put his coaching on hold to concentrate on his playing career.
Following graduation in 2015 Martin moved to Sheffield to train full time with the British Para Table Tennis Performance Team.
